Exemplum, también una copia - una forma literaria medieval que evoca un evento pasado de naturaleza ficticia o auténtica para convencer al público de la verdad de un asunto. La copia fue escrita en colecciones para uso de los predicadores para enriquecer los sermones. Uno de los autores más famosos de tales colecciones fue Jacques de Vitry. Las características de esta forma son la presentación alegórica de la materia como parte de una narración que representa un evento particular, seguida de una explicación moralizante de la historia anterior. Similar al ejemplo, el rasgo muestra una parábola. La característica esencial que distingue a estas dos especies es la actitud de la parte moralizante de la narración. En el caso de la parábola, la interpretación moralizante está permanentemente vinculada a la historia. En el caso del ejemplo, el elemento se agrega explícitamente a la historia. Esto se hace agregando una moral a una historia que funcionaba anteriormente o dando una interpretación sorprendentemente moral, que no es obvia, contrariamente a interpretaciones anteriores o sorprendentemente diferente.

Exemplum, także egzemplum – średniowieczna forma literacka przywołująca pewne przeszłe zdarzenie o charakterze fikcyjnym lub autentycznym w celu przekonania odbiorców o prawdziwości jakiejś sprawy. Egzempla spisywano w zbiory dla wykorzystywania ich przez kaznodziejów do wzbogacania kazań. Jednym z bardziej znanych autorów takich zbiorów był Jacques de Vitry. Charakterystycznymi cechami tej formy jest alegoryczne przedstawienie omawianej kwestii w ramach narracji przedstawiającej określone wydarzenie, po którym następuje moralizatorskie objaśnienie wcześniejszego opowiadania. Podobne do exemplum cechy wykazuje przypowieść. Zasadniczą cechą rozróżniającą te dwa gatunki jest stosunek części moralizatorskiej do narracji. W wypadku przypowieści wykładnia moralizatorska jest trwale związana z opowieścią. W wypadku exemplum stanowi element w jawny sposób dodany do opowieści. Realizowane jest to przez dodanie morału do wcześniej odrębnie funkcjonującej historii lub przez nadanie wydarzeniom zaskakującej interpretacji moralnej – nieoczywistej, sprzecznej z wcześniejszymi interpretacjami lub w inny sposób zaskakującej.
