Graz es una ciudad en el sureste de Austria, la capital de Estiria. La ciudad está situada en el río Mur, al pie de las montañas Styry. Después de Viena, la segunda ciudad más grande e importante de Austria. El nombre de la ciudad deriva del Gradec de la palabra eslovena para un pequeño castillo. Esto se debe al hecho de que la ciudad de Graz se construyó en el sitio de un asentamiento eslavo anterior de ese nombre. La primera mención de Graz se remonta al año 881, cuando fue mencionado en el documento como una fortaleza de los gobernantes de Estiria. La confirmación del estado fue la concesión de los derechos de la ciudad en 1281 por Rudolf I Habsburg. Desde la primera mitad del siglo XV hasta el siglo XVII, Graz fue la sede de la dinastía de los Habsburgo de Estiria. Bajo su patrocinio en los siglos 15 y 16, la ciudad se desarrolló bien, luego en Schlossberg la fortaleza fue erigida para la defensa contra los turcos. En 1586, se estableció la primera universidad en Graz. En 1809 tuve la suerte de sitiar a los ejércitos napoleónicos. Graz es un importante centro industrial, cultural y turístico. En la ciudad hay 4 universidades y 2 otras escuelas superiores, que asisten juntas a más de 40 mil.

Nazwa miasta wywodzi się od Gradec słoweńskiego wyrazu oznaczającego mały zamek. Jest to związane z tym, że miasto Graz powstało na terenie wcześniejszej słowiańskiej osady o takiej właśnie nazwie. Pierwsze wzmianki o Grazu pochodzą z roku 881, kiedy w dokumencie wymienia się go jako warownię władców Styrii. Potwierdzeniem statusu było przyznanie praw miejskich w roku 1281 przez Rudolfa I Habsburga. Od pierwszej połowy XV wieku aż do XVII wieku Graz był siedzibą styryjskiej z gałęzi dynastii Habsburgów. Pod ich patronatem w XV i XVI wieku miasto dobrze się rozwijało, wtedy to na górze Schlossberg wzniesiono twierdzę dla obrony przed Turkami. W roku 1586 w Grazu powstał pierwszy uniwersytet. W 1809 roku twierdzę bez powodzenia oblegały wojska napoleońskie. Graz jest znaczącym ośrodkiem przemysłowym, kulturalnym i turystycznym. W mieście znajdują się 4 uniwersytety i 2 inne szkoły wyższe, do których uczęszcza razem ponad 40 tys.
