Dardanelos: el estrecho entre la península de los Balcanes y Asia Menor, conecta el mar Egeo con el mar de Mármara. Longitud 120,5 km, ancho 1,3-18,5 km, los puertos principales son Gelibolu y Çanakkale. En la antigüedad conocido como Hellespont. Una fuerte corriente fluye desde el Mar de Mármara hasta el Mar Egeo. Está al lado del Bósforo, el segundo cuello de botella en el camino hacia el Mar Negro. El estrecho era parte de la ruta del agua entre Europa y Anatolia. El nombre se deriva del nombre mítico de Helle, que murió en las aguas del estrecho. Griego Hellespontos significa "Mar Helle". También fue traducido como "Puente de Hellen". El estrecho era un gran lugar para controlar los fluidos barcos, que era la fuente de la riqueza de las ciudades circundantes. Tłumaczono ją także jako "most Hellenów". Wąska cieśnina była doskonałym miejscem do kontroli przepływających statków, co stanowiło źródło bogactwa okolicznych miast. Najwcześniejszym z nich była Troja, której zniszczenie było spowodowane najprawdopodobniej chęcią zapewnienia sobie swobodnego importu metali przez Greków. W pierwszej połowie I tysiąclecia p.n.e. Grecy założyli nad Hellespontem liczne kolonie. Wojska perskie pod koniec VI w. p.n.e. oraz w 480 r. p.n.e. przekroczyły cieśninę po moście z łodzi.
