Preta - una categoría de seres míticos en el hinduismo, que representa los fantasmas de los muertos en un tiempo relativamente reciente. Preta en la literatura de Powidzian representa los componentes intangibles que permanecieron después de la cremación del difunto. Es una forma transicional de ser póstumo. Preta se transforma en la esencia de la copa, si el descendiente de un hombre realizará una ceremonia sapindikarana un año después. Entonces el espíritu preta entra en la tierra de los "padres", llamada pistonloka. El abandono del ritual de sapindikarana resulta en la transformación del espíritu del difunto en un ser de tipo bhuta. Básicamente preta es favorecer a las personas. Vivo en áreas de cremación, cementerios y campos de batalla. El asiento de su superior es una pretaradupa.

Preta w literaturze powedyjskiej reprezentuje składniki niematerialne, które pozostały po kremacji zmarłego. Jest to forma przejściowa bytu pośmiertnego. Preta przeistacza się w istotę pitry, jeśli do roku czasu męski potomek zmarłego przeprowadzi ceremonię sapindikarana. Wtedy duch preta wkracza do krainy 'ojców' o nazwie pitryloka. Zaniechanie przeprowadzenia rytuału sapindikarana, skutkuje przeistoczeniem się ducha zmarłego człowieka w istotę typu bhuta. Zasadniczo preta jest przychylny ludziom. Zamieszkuje obszary miejsc kremacji, cmentarze i pola bitew. Siedziba ich istoty nadrzednej to pretaradźapura.
