Stoa: en la arquitectura griega, era una sala de columna alargada, independiente, que estaba cerrada en la pared posterior, a menudo decorada con murales. Stoy era un lugar de comercio, pero también servía para descansar o realizar tareas administrativas. Sin embargo, su objetivo principal era proporcionar a los habitantes de las ciudades griegas protección contra la lluvia y el calor solar en lugares públicos. Stoy solía enmarcar el ágora y se usaba en palestras y gimnasios. La arquitectura bizantina era una sala cuyo techo estaba sostenido por una o varias filas de columnas colocadas paralelas a la pared posterior. Uno de los stands más famosos de Atenas fue el llamado ἡ στοὰ ἡ ποικίλη, cerca de Ágora. Fue construido por Kimon alrededor de 450 aC, y fue nombrado por sus pinturas murales Polignot, Mikon Panajos, que representan escenas de batalla. El filósofo Zenon de Kition enseñó el stoa poikile, y de ahí el nombre de la escuela filosófica fundada por él: el estoicismo.

Ich podstawowym przeznaczeniem było jednak zapewnienie mieszkańcom greckich miast osłony przed deszczem i żarem słonecznym w miejscach publicznych. Stoy często obramowywały agorę i były stosowane w palestrach i gimnazjonach. W architekturze bizantyjskiej była to sala, której dach był podtrzymywany przez jeden lub kilka rzędów kolumn ustawionych równolegle do tylnej ściany. Jedną ze słynnych stoi w Atenach była tak zwana ἡ στοὰ ἡ ποικίλη niedaleko agory. Została wybudowana przez Kimona około roku 450 p.n.e., a nazwano ją tak dla zdobiących jej ściany barwnych malowideł Polignota, Mikona Panajosa przestawiających sceny bitewne. W stoa poikile nauczał filozof Zenon z Kition i stąd wzięła się nazwa założonej przez niego szkoły filozoficznej – stoicyzm.
