Stygobiont, freatobiont - organismo adaptado para vivir en el agua subterránea. Debido a las condiciones de vida específicas de los stygobions, se observan adaptaciones específicas, como la desaparición de los órganos visuales, la pérdida de pigmento en la piel y los revestimientos superficiales. En estos animales hay fotofobia, la desaparición de las estaciones estacionales, la desaceleración de los procesos metabólicos, el fuerte desarrollo de los órganos del tacto y los órganos para facilitar la orientación espacial en la oscuridad. Debido al origen de stygal, algunos stygobions se derivan de formas marinas, algunas de formas de agua dulce. En Polonia, la stygobionty ocurre solo en las montañas. Debido a los períodos en los que los estigobios se han adaptado al entorno del agua subterránea, se distinguen los siguientes: ▪ paleostybiosa - especies con el pedigrí más antiguo; ▪ neostybosis - especies con un pedigrí más joven; ▪ sustitutos, especies que se han adaptado al estireno hace relativamente poco tiempo.

Stygobiont, freatobiont – organizm przystosowany do życia w wodach podziemnych. Ze względu na specyficzne warunki życia u stygobiontów obserwuje się specyficzne przystosowania, np.: zanik organów wzroku, zanik pigmentu w skórze i powierzchniowych powłokach ciała. U zwierząt tych występuje fotofobizm, zanik periodyczności sezonowej, spowolnienie procesów metabolicznych, silny rozwój narządów dotyku i narządów ułatwiających orientację przestrzenną w ciemności. Ze względu na pochodzenie stygalu, część stygobiontów pochodzi od form morskich, część od form słodkowodnych. W Polsce stygobionty występują jedynie w górach. Ze względu na okresy, w których stygobionty przystosowały się do środowiska wód podziemnych, wyróżnia się: ▪ paleostygobionty – gatunki o najstarszym rodowodzie; ▪ neostygobionty – gatunki o młodszym rodowodzie; ▪ substygobionty – gatunki, które przystosowały się do stygalu stosunkowo niedawno.
