Lir, de la familia Arp, Es un instrumento de cuerda antiguo que va al siglo IX. Aunque está confundida con la kithara, está separada de ella por la formación más pequeña, si no la sin pies. El número de cables era inicialmente de 3 a 4 debido a que las autoridades griegas consistían en cuatro tetrakords de voz, mientras que con el tiempo se fabricaban con 7 o raramente con 8 cables. Hay dos Lir diferentes en términos de forma: ▪ Chelys; una concha de tortuga en forma de un eco y un mango hecho de cuerno de cabra. ▪ Barbitos Long es una forma con los brazos que se acercan entre sí y es jugada por los Sátiros con toda la diversión de los dionisos. En la antigua Grecia, se creía que Lir era el regalo de un dios Hermes a su hermano Apollon. Lir fue el símbolo de los poetas y pensadores en el período helenístico, y posteriormente se convirtió en la salida del pensamiento lirico. Dado que muchas formas diferentes de Arp se han desarrollado a partir de antiguos instrumentos de cuerda Lir y Kithara, ambos instrumentos se pueden llamar formas tempranas de Arp.

Şekil açısından iki farklı Lir vardır: ▪ Chelys; kaplumbağa kabuğu formunda bir yankı gövdesi ve keçi boynuzundan yapılmış kolları vardır. ▪ Barbitos Uzun, yukarıda birbirine doğru yaklaşan kolları olan bir formdur ve dionisos'a ait tüm eğlencelerde Satyr'ler tarafından çalınır. Antik Yunanistan'da Lir'in tanrı Hermes'in bulduğu ve kardeşi tanrı Apollon'a hediye ettiğine inanılırdı. Lir, Hellenistik Dönem'de ozanların ve düşünürlerin sembolüydü bu nedenle de sonradan Lirik düşüncenin çıkış kaynağı olmuştur. Antik telli çalgılar Lir ve Kithara'dan birçok değişik Arp formu geliştirilmiş olduğundan, her iki enstruman da Arp'ın erken dönem formu olarak adlandırılabilinir.
