L'albinisme est un trouble congénital caractérisé par l'absence complète ou partielle de pigments cutanés, capillaires et yeux en raison de l'absence ou du défaut de la tyrosinase, une enzyme contenant du cuivre impliquée dans la production de la mélanine. L'albinisme résulte de l'héritage des allèles de gènes récessifs et est connu pour affecter tous les vertébrés, y compris les humains. Alors qu'un organisme dont l'absence totale de mélanine est appelée albino, un organisme dont la quantité de mélanine diminuée est décrite comme albinoïde. L'albinisme est associé à un certain nombre de défauts de la vision, tels que la photophobie, le nystagmus et l'astigmatisme. Le manque de pigmentation de la peau fait plus de susceptibilité aux coups de soleil et aux cancers de la peau. Dans de rares cas, comme le syndrome de Chédiak-Higashi, l'albinisme peut être associé à des déficiences du transport des granules de mélanine. Cela affecte également les granules essentiels présents dans les cellules immunitaires conduisant à une susceptibilité accrue à l'infection.

Albinism is a congenital disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes due to absence or defect of tyrosinase, a copper-containing enzyme involved in the production of melanin. Albinism results from inheritance of recessive gene alleles and is known to affect all vertebrates, including humans. While an organism with complete absence of melanin is called an albino an organism with only a diminished amount of melanin is described as albinoid. Albinism is associated with a number of vision defects, such as photophobia, nystagmus and astigmatism. Lack of skin pigmentation makes for more susceptibility to sunburn and skin cancers. In rare cases such as Chédiak–Higashi syndrome, albinism may be associated with deficiencies in the transportation of melanin granules. This also affects essential granules present in immune cells leading to increased susceptibility to infection.
