Alderfly
Les algerins sont des insectes mégaloptères de la famille Sialidae. Ils sont étroitement liés aux dobsonflies et aux mouches, ainsi qu'aux Euchauliodidae préhistoriques. Tous les alderflows vivants - environ 66 espèces en totalité - font partie de la sous-famille Sialinae, qui contient entre un et sept genres existants selon les opinions des différents scientifiques. Mais dans la plupart des classifications, tous ou presque tous sont traités comme sous-genres de Sialis. Les Sialinae ont une longueur de corps inférieure à 25 mm, des antennes filamenteuses longues et quatre grandes ailes sombres dont la paire antérieure est légèrement plus longue que la postérieure. Ils manquent d'ocellis et leur quatrième segment tarsien est dilaté et profondément bilobé. Les larves d'alderfly mortes sont utilisées comme appâts dans la pêche. Les femelles ont un grand nombre d'œufs sur des tiges d'herbe près de l'eau. Les larves sont aquatiques, actives, armées de fortes mandibules pointues et respirent au moyen de sept paires de filaments branchiaux abdominaux. En pleine taille, qui prend entre un et deux ans, ils quittent l'eau et passent une étape pupal tranquille sur le terrain avant la métamorphose dans l'insecte sexuellement mature.
