Allométrie
L'allométrie est l'étude de la relation entre la taille du corps et la forme, l'anatomie, la physiologie et enfin le comportement, d'abord décrit par Otto Snell en 1892, D'Arcy Thompson en 1917 et Julian Huxley en 1932. L'allométrie est une étude bien connue, en particulier dans Analyse de forme statistique pour ses développements théoriques, ainsi que dans la biologie pour des applications pratiques aux taux de croissance différentielle des parties du corps d'un organisme vivant. Une application concerne l'étude de diverses espèces d'insectes, où une petite modification de la taille globale du corps peut entraîner une augmentation énorme et disproportionnée des dimensions des appendices telles que les jambes, les antennes ou les cornes. La relation entre les deux quantités mesurées est souvent exprimée comme une loi de pouvoir: ou sous une forme logarithmique: où est l'exposant à la mise à l'échelle de la loi. Les méthodes pour estimer cet exposant à partir de données utilisent des régressions de type 2 telles que la régression d'axe majeur ou une régression d'axe majeur réduite car elles tiennent compte de la variation dans les deux variables, contrairement à la régression des moindres carrés, qui ne tient pas compte de la variance de l'erreur dans la variable indépendante.
