L'alpha-foetoprotéine est une protéine qui, chez l'homme, est codée par le gène AFP. Le gène AFP est situé sur le bras q du chromosome 4. L'AFP est une protéine plasmatique majeure produite par le sac vitellin et le foie pendant le développement foetal. On pense que c'est la forme fœtale de l'albumine sérique. L'AFP se lie au cuivre, au nickel, aux acides gras et à la bilirubine et se trouve sous des formes monomères, dimères et trimères.
