Asymptote
Dans la géométrie analytique, une asymptote d'une courbe est une ligne telle que la distance entre la courbe et la ligne approche de zéro car elles ont tendance à l'infini. Certaines sources incluent l'exigence selon laquelle la courbe peut ne pas traverser la ligne infiniment souvent, mais cela est inhabituel pour les auteurs modernes. Dans certains contextes, comme la géométrie algébrique, une asymptote est définie comme une ligne tangente à une courbe à l'infini. Le mot asymptote est dérivé du grec ἀσύμπτωτος qui signifie "ne pas tomber ensemble", de ἀ priv. + Σύν "ensemble" + πτωτ-ôς "tombé". Le terme a été introduit par Apollonius de Perga dans son travail sur les sections coniques, mais contrairement à son sens moderne, il l'utilisait pour désigner toute ligne qui ne croise pas la courbe donnée. Il existe potentiellement trois types d'asymptotes: asymptotes horizontales, verticales et obliques. Pour les courbes données par le graphique d'une fonction y = ƒ, les asymptotes horizontales sont des lignes horizontales que le graphique de la fonction approche alors que x tend à + ∞ ou -∞. Les asymptotes verticales sont des lignes verticales à proximité desquelles la fonction augmente sans être liée.
