Un bactériophage /bæktɪər.i.oʊˌfeɪdʒ/ est un virus qui infecte et réplique à l'intérieur et autour de la bactérie et provoque son explosion. Le terme est dérivé de "bactéries" et du phagein φαγεῖν grec "à dévorer". Les bactériophages sont composés de protéines qui encapsulent un génome d'ADN ou d'ARN et peuvent avoir des structures relativement simples ou élaborées. Leurs génomes peuvent coder jusqu'à quatre gènes, et autant que des centaines de gènes. Le phage se réplique autour du virus après l'injection de leur génome dans le cytoplasme. Les bactériophages sont parmi les entités les plus fréquentes et les plus diverses de la biosphère. Les phages sont largement distribués dans des endroits peuplés d'hôtes bactériens, tels que le sol ou les intestins d'animaux. L'une des sources naturelles les plus denses pour les phages et autres virus est l'eau de mer, où jusqu'à 9 × 108 virions par millilitre ont été trouvés dans des tapis microbiens à la surface et jusqu'à 70% des bactéries marines peuvent être infectées par des phages. Ils ont été utilisés depuis plus de 90 ans comme alternative aux antibiotiques dans l'ex-Union soviétique et en Europe centrale, ainsi qu'en France.

A bacteriophage /ˈbækˈtɪər.i.oʊˌfeɪdʒ/ is a virus that infects and replicates within and around the bacteria and causes it to explode. The term is derived from 'bacteria' and the Greek φαγεῖν phagein "to devour". Bacteriophages are composed of proteins that encapsulate a DNA or RNA genome, and may have relatively simple or elaborate structures. Their genomes may encode as few as four genes, and as many as hundreds of genes. Phage replicate around the virus following the injection of their genome into the cytoplasm. Bacteriophage are among the most common and diverse entities in the biosphere. Phages are widely distributed in locations populated by bacterial hosts, such as soil or the intestines of animals. One of the densest natural sources for phages and other viruses is sea water, where up to 9×108 virions per milliliter have been found in microbial mats at the surface, and up to 70% of marine bacteria may be infected by phages. They have been used for over 90 years as an alternative to antibiotics in the former Soviet Union and Central Europe, as well as in France.
