Le camp de concentration de Bergen-Belsen
Bergen-Belsen était un camp de concentration nazi dans ce qui est aujourd'hui la Basse-Saxe dans le nord de l'Allemagne, au sud-ouest de la ville de Bergen près de Celle. À l'origine établi comme camp de prisonniers de guerre, en 1943, une partie de celle-ci est devenue un camp de concentration. Au départ, il s'agissait d'un «camp d'échange», où des otages juifs ont été organisés dans l'intention de les échanger contre des prisonniers de guerre allemands détenus à l'étranger. Le camp a ensuite été élargi pour accueillir les juifs d'autres camps de concentration. Après 1945, le nom a été appliqué au camp des personnes déplacées établi à proximité, mais il est le plus souvent associé au camp de concentration. De 1941 à 1945, près de 20 000 prisonniers de guerre soviétiques et 50 000 autres détenus sont morts là-bas, avec jusqu'à 35 000 morts de typhus au cours des premiers mois de 1945, peu avant et après la libération. Le camp a été libéré le 15 avril 1945 par la 11e Division blindée britannique. Les soldats ont découvert environ 60 000 prisonniers à l'intérieur, la plupart d'entre eux étant à moitié affamés et gravement malades, et 13 000 cadavres se trouvant dans le camp sans être enterrés.
