La biogéochimie est la discipline scientifique qui implique l'étude des processus et réactions chimiques, physiques, géologiques et biologiques qui régissent la composition de l'environnement naturel. En particulier, la biogéochimie est l'étude des cycles d'éléments chimiques, tels que le carbone et l'azote, et leurs interactions et leur incorporation dans les êtres vivants transportés à travers les systèmes biologiques à l'échelle de la terre dans l'espace par le temps. Le domaine se concentre sur les cycles chimiques qui sont soit influencés par l'activité biologique, soit leur impact. Un accent particulier est mis sur l'étude des cycles du carbone, de l'azote, du soufre et du phosphore. La biogéochimie est une science des systèmes étroitement liée à l'écologie des systèmes.
