Great Bitter Lake
Le Great Bitter Lake est un lac d'eau salée qui fait partie du canal de Suez. Il est relié au petit lac amer, à travers lequel le canal fonctionne également. Avant la construction du canal, leur site était occupé par des vallées sèches sèches. Ensemble, les lacs amer ont une surface d'environ 250 km². Le canal traverse également le lac Manzala et le lac Timsah, au nord des lacs Bitter. Comme le canal n'a pas de serrures, l'eau de mer s'écoule librement dans le lac depuis la Méditerranée et la Mer Rouge. En général, au nord des lacs, le courant se retourne saisonnièrement, étant en hiver en hiver et au sud en été. Au sud des lacs, le courant est maré, en inversant les marées dans la mer Rouge. Les poissons peuvent migrer, généralement dans une direction nord, à travers le canal et les lacs dans ce qu'on appelle une migration de Lessepsian. De ce fait, certaines espèces de la Mer Rouge sont venues coloniser la Méditerranée orientale. Dans la dernière partie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le lac a été utilisé pour interner des navires de guerre italiens qui s'étaient rendus aux Alliés, y compris les cuirassés Vittorio Veneto et Italia.
