Brachycéphalie, également connu sous le nom de syndrome de tête plate, est un type de trouble céphalique. Il s'agit d'une variation normale chez certaines races domestiques de chiens et de chats, et peut être normal ou anormal chez d'autres espèces animales. Cette caractéristique se manifeste dans le syndrome de Down. L'incidence de la brachycéphalie a considérablement augmenté depuis l'avènement des recommandations du syndrome de la mort subite du nourrisson pour que les parents gardent leurs bébés sur le dos. Il est considéré comme un problème cosmétique. De nombreux pédiatres restent inconscients du problème et des traitements possibles. Les traitements varient d'un simple repositionnement de bébés de moins de 5 mois ou plus impliquent un traitement avec un casque pour les enfants de moins de 18 mois. Il existe également des cas de brachycéphalie associés à la plagiocéphalie, cette déformation se produit lorsqu'il existe une combinaison de brachycéphalie et de plagiocephalie présente.

It is a normal variation in some domesticated dog and cat breeds, and can be normal or abnormal in other animal species. In humans, the disorder results from premature fusion of the coronal sutures or from external deformation. The coronal suture is the fibrous joint that unites the frontal bone with the two parietal bones of the skull. The parietal bones form the top and sides of the skull. This feature can be seen in Down syndrome. The incidence of brachycephaly has increased dramatically since the advent of sudden infant death syndrome recommendations for parents to keep their babies on their backs. It is considered just a cosmetic problem. Many pediatricians remain unaware of the issue and possible treatments. Treatments range from a simple repositioning of babies below the age of 5 months or more involved treatment with a helmet for children under the age of 18 months. There are also cases of brachycephaly associated with plagiocephaly, this deformity occurs when there is a combination of brachycephaly and plagiocephaly present.
