Brachythérapie
La brachythérapie, également connue sous le nom de radiothérapie interne, radiothérapie à source scellée, curiothérapie ou endocurietherapy, est une forme de radiothérapie où une source de rayonnement est placée à l'intérieur ou à proximité de la zone nécessitant un traitement. La brachythérapie est couramment utilisée comme traitement efficace pour le cancer du col de l'utérus, de la prostate, du sein et de la peau et peut également être utilisée pour traiter les tumeurs dans de nombreux autres sites corporels. La brachythérapie peut être utilisée seule ou en combinaison avec d'autres traitements tels que la chirurgie, la radiothérapie externe et la chimiothérapie. La brachythérapie contraste avec la radiothérapie source non scellée dans laquelle un radioisotope thérapeutique est injecté dans le corps pour localiser chimiquement sur le tissu qui nécessite une destruction. Il contraste également avec l'EBRT, dans lequel les rayons X à haute énergie sont dirigés contre la tumeur de l'extérieur du corps. La brachythérapie implique plutôt le placement précis de sources de rayonnements à courte portée directement sur le site de la tumeur cancéreuse.
