Dans l'anatomie des humains et de nombreux autres vertébrés, le tronc cérébral est la partie postérieure du cerveau, adjacente et structurellement continue avec la moelle épinière. Chez l'homme, il est généralement décrit comme incluant la médulla oblongata, le pons et le mésencéphale. Moins fréquemment, des parties du diencephalon sont incluses. Le tronc cérébral fournit l'innervation moteur et sensorielle principale au visage et au cou par les nerfs crâniens. Sur les douze paires de nerfs crâniens, dix paires proviennent du tronc cérébral. Bien que petit, il s'agit d'une partie extrêmement importante du cerveau, car les connexions nerveuses des systèmes moteurs et sensoriels de la partie principale du cerveau au reste du corps traversent le tronc cérébral. Ceci inclut le tube cortico-spinale, la colonne postérieure-mémoires du lemniscus et le tractus spinothalamique. Le tronc cérébral joue également un rôle important dans la régulation de la fonction cardiaque et respiratoire. Il régule également le système nerveux central et joue un rôle central dans le maintien de la conscience et la régulation du cycle du sommeil. Le tronc cérébral comporte de nombreuses fonctions de base, dont la fréquence cardiaque, la respiration, le sommeil et la consommation.
