L'Âge de bronze
L'âge du bronze est une période de temps caractérisée par l'utilisation du bronze, de la proto-écriture et d'autres caractéristiques précoces de la civilisation urbaine. L'âge du bronze est la deuxième période principale du système Stone-Bronze-Iron de trois ans, proposé par les temps modernes par Christian Jürgensen Thomsen, pour classer et étudier les sociétés anciennes. Une civilisation ancienne est définie comme étant à l'âge du bronze, soit en fondant son propre cuivre et son alliage avec de l'étain, soit en vendant du bronze dans des zones de production ailleurs. Les minerais de cuivre et d'étain sont rares, comme en témoigne le fait qu'il n'y avait pas de bronzes en étain en Asie occidentale avant que le commerce en bronze ne commence au troisième millénaire avant JC. Dans le monde entier, l'âge du bronze a généralement suivi la période néolithique, mais dans certaines parties du monde, l'ère du cuivre a été une transition du néolithique à l'âge du bronze. Bien que l'âge du fer ait généralement suivi l'âge du bronze, dans certaines régions, l'âge du fer a pénétré directement sur le néolithique de l'extérieur de la région, à l'exception de l'Afrique subsaharienne où il a été développé de manière indépendante. Les cultures de l'âge du bronze différaient dans leur développement de la première écriture.
