Un système de coordonnées cartésiennes est un système de coordonnées qui spécifie chaque point uniquement dans un plan par une paire de coordonnées numériques, qui sont les distances signées du point à deux lignes perpendiculaires dirigées fixes, mesurées dans la même unité de longueur. Chaque ligne de référence s'appelle un axe de coordonnées ou juste un axe du système, et le point où ils se rencontrent est son origine, habituellement à la paire ordonnée. Les coordonnées peuvent également être définies comme les positions des projections perpendiculaires du point sur les deux axes, exprimées comme des distances signées par rapport à l'origine. On peut utiliser le même principe pour spécifier la position de n'importe quel point dans l'espace tridimensionnel par trois coordonnées cartésiennes, ses distances signées à trois plans mutuellement perpendiculaires. En général, n coordonnées cartésiennes spécifient le point dans un espace euclidien n-dimensionnel pour toute dimension n. Ces coordonnées sont égales, jusqu'à signes, aux distances allant du point à n hyperplanes mutuellement perpendiculaires.
