Ceanothus
Ceanothus L. / ˌsiːənoʊθəs / est un genre d'environ 50 à 60 espèces d'arbustes ou de petits arbres dans la famille des Rhamnaceae. Le genre est confiné en Amérique du Nord, avec le centre de sa distribution en Californie. Certaines espèces se trouvent dans l'est des États-Unis et le sud-est du Canada, et d'autres s'étendent aussi loin que le Guatemala. La plupart sont des arbustes de 0,5 à 3 m de haut, mais C. arboreus et C. thyrsiflorus, tous deux de Californie, peuvent être de petits arbres jusqu'à 6-7 m de haut. Le nom est dérivé du mot grec κεανοθος, qui a été appliqué par Theophrastus à une plante épineuse du Vieux Monde qui est censée être Cirsium arvense.
