Une unité de traitement centrale est le matériel d'un ordinateur qui exécute les instructions d'un programme informatique en effectuant les opérations arithmétiques, logiques et d'entrée / sortie basiques du système. Le terme a été utilisé dans l'industrie de l'informatique au moins depuis le début des années 1960. La forme, la conception et la mise en œuvre des CPU ont changé au cours de leur histoire, mais leur fonctionnement fondamental reste très pareil. Un ordinateur peut avoir plus d'une CPU; C'est ce qu'on appelle le multiprocessus. Toutes les CPU modernes sont des microprocesseurs, ce qui se traduit par une seule puce. Certains circuits intégrés peuvent contenir plusieurs CPU sur une seule puce; Ces CI sont appelés processeurs multi-core. Un IC contenant une CPU peut également contenir des périphériques et d'autres composants d'un système informatique; C'est ce qu'on appelle un système sur une puce. Deux composants typiques d'une CPU sont l'unité logique arithmétique, qui effectue des opérations arithmétiques et logiques, et l'unité de contrôle, qui extrait les instructions de la mémoire et les décode et les exécute, en appelant l'ALU si nécessaire. Tous les systèmes informatiques ne dépendent pas d'une unité centrale de traitement.
