Charles Martel était un homme d'État francais et un chef militaire qui, en tant que duc et prince des Francs et maire du palais, était de facto le souverain de Francia de 718 jusqu'à sa mort. Le fils illégitime de l'homme d'Etat francais Pepin of Herstal et une femme noble nommée Alpaida, Martel a réussi à affirmer ses prétentions en tant que successeur de son père que le pouvoir derrière le trône dans la politique franque. En continuant et en s'appuyant sur le travail de son père, il a restauré le gouvernement centralisé à Francia et a commencé la série de campagnes militaires qui ont rétabli les Francs comme les maîtres incontestés de toute la Gaule. Dans les guerres étrangères, Martel a subjugué la Bavière, l'Alemannia et la Frise, a vaincu les Saxons païens et a arrêté l'avance islamique en Europe occidentale à la bataille de Tours. Martel est considéré comme la figure fondatrice du moyen âge européen. Qualifié en tant qu'administrateur et guerrier, il est souvent crédité d'un rôle primordial dans le développement du féodalisme et de la chevalerie. Martel était un grand patron de Saint-Boniface et a fait la première tentative de réconciliation entre la papauté et les francs.
