Coacervate
Un coacervat est une minuscule gouttelette sphérique de molécules organiques variées qui sont maintenues ensemble par des forces hydrophobes à partir d'un liquide environnant. Les coacervés ont été très appréciés par Alexander Oparin comme crucial dans sa première théorie de l'abiogenèse. Cette théorie propose que le métabolisme soit antérieur à la réplication de l'information. Le débat sur le fait que le métabolisme ou les molécules capables de réplication de modèle est venu d'abord dans les origines de la vie reste ouverte et, pendant des décennies, la théorie d'Oparin était l'approche dominante de la question de l'origine de la vie. Les coacervés mesurent de 1 à 100 micromètres à travers, possèdent des propriétés osmotiques et se forment spontanément à partir de certaines solutions organiques diluées. Leur nom provient du latin coacervare, c'est-à-dire «assembler ensemble».
