Le cas datif est un cas grammatical généralement utilisé pour indiquer le nom à quoi quelque chose est donné, comme dans "George a donné à Jamie une boisson". En général, le datif marque l'objet indirect d'un verbe, bien que dans certains cas, le datif soit utilisé pour l'objet direct d'un verbe appartenant directement à un acte de donner quelque chose. La chose donnée peut être un objet tangible, comme «un livre» ou «une tapisserie», ou peut-être une abstraction immatérielle, comme «une réponse» ou une «aide». Dans certaines langues, l'affaire dative a assimilé les fonctions d'autres cas maintenant éteints. Dans le grec ancien, le datif a les fonctions du locataire proto-indo-européen et instrumentale ainsi que celles du datif original. Parfois, le datif a des fonctions non liées à donner. En gaélique écossais et en irlandais, le terme cas datif est utilisé de manière trompeuse dans les grammaires traditionnelles pour se référer au casse-tête préposé des noms à la suite de simples prépositions et de l'article défini. En géorgien, le cas datif est également le sujet de la phrase dans certains verbes et certains temps. C'est ce qu'on appelle la construction dative.
