Diamagnetisme
Les matériaux diamagnétiques créent un champ magnétique en opposition à un champ magnétique appliqué à l'extérieur. C'est un effet mécanique quantique qui se produit dans tous les matériaux; Où c'est la seule contribution au magnétisme, le matériau s'appelle un diamant. Contrairement à un ferromagnétique, un diamant n'est pas un aimant permanent. Sa perméabilité magnétique est inférieure à μ0. Dans la plupart des matériaux, le diamagnétisme est un effet faible, mais un supraconducteur repousse entièrement le champ magnétique, à l'exception d'une fine couche à la surface. Les diamagnes ont d'abord été découverts lorsque Sebald Justinus Brugmans a observé en 1778 que le bismuth et l'antimoine étaient repoussés par des champs magnétiques. Le terme «diamagnétisme» a été inventé par Michael Faraday en septembre 1845, lorsqu'il s'est rendu compte que chaque matériau a répondu à un champ magnétique appliqué.
