Einsteinium
L'einsteinium est un élément synthétique avec le symbole Es et le numéro atomique 99. C'est le septième élément transuranique et un actinide. L'einsteinium a été découvert en tant que composante des débris de la première explosion de la bombe à hydrogène en 1952 et nommé d'après Albert Einstein. Son isotope le plus courant, l'einsteinium-253, est produit artificiellement à partir de la désintégration du californium-253 dans quelques réacteurs nucléaires dédiés à haute puissance avec un rendement total de l'ordre d'un milligramme par an. La synthèse du réacteur est suivie d'une procédure complexe de séparation de l'einsteinium-253 d'autres actinides et des produits de leur désintégration. D'autres isotopes sont synthétisés dans divers laboratoires, mais à des quantités beaucoup plus faibles, en bombardant des éléments lourds d'actinide avec des ions légers. En raison de la faible quantité d'einsteinium produit et de la demi-vie courte de son isotope le plus facilement produit, il n'existe pratiquement aucune application pratique en dehors de la recherche scientifique de base. En particulier, l'einsteinium a été utilisé pour synthétiser pour la première fois 17 atomes du nouvel élément mendelevium en 1955. L'einsteinium est un métal souple, argenté et paramagnétique.
