Élastomère
Un élastomère est un polymère à viscoélasticité et des forces intermoléculaires très faibles, ayant généralement un faible module de Young et une contrainte de défaillance élevée par rapport à d'autres matériaux. Le terme, dérivé du polymère élastique, est souvent utilisé de façon interchangeable avec le terme caoutchouc, bien que ce dernier soit préféré lorsqu'il s'agit de vulcanisats. Chacun des monomères qui se lient pour former le polymère est habituellement constitué de carbone, d'hydrogène, d'oxygène et / ou de silicium. Les élastomères sont des polymères amorphes existant au-dessus de leur température de transition vitreuse, de sorte qu'un mouvement segmentaire considérable est possible. À température ambiante, les caoutchoucs sont donc relativement doux et déformables. Leurs utilisations principales sont pour les joints, les adhésifs et les pièces flexibles moulées. Les zones d'application pour différents types de caoutchouc sont des segments de collecteurs et de couvercles aussi divers que les pneus, les semelles de chaussure ainsi que les éléments d'amortissement et d'isolation. L'importance des caoutchoucs peut être appréciée du fait que les recettes mondiales devraient atteindre 56 milliards de dollars américains en 2020.
