Emblem book
Les livres d'emblèmes sont une catégorie de livre didactique principalement illustré imprimé en Europe au cours des XVIe et XVIIe siècles, contenant généralement un certain nombre d'images emblématiques avec un texte explicatif. Les chercheurs diffèrent sur la question clé de savoir si les emblèmes réels en question sont les images visuelles, les textes d'accompagnement ou la combinaison des deux. Ceci est compréhensible, étant donné que le premier livre d'emblèmes, Emblemata d'Andrea Alciato, a été publié pour la première fois dans une édition non autorisée dans laquelle les gravures en bois ont été choisies par l'imprimante sans aucune contribution de l'auteur, qui avait diffusé les textes sous forme manuscrite non illustrée. Certains premiers livres d'emblèmes n'étaient pas illustrés, en particulier ceux publiés par l'imprimeur français Denis de Harsy. Avec le temps, cependant, le public de lecture s'attendait à ce que les emblèmes contiennent des combinaisons de texte-image. Chaque combinaison consistait en une gravure sur bois ou une gravure accompagnée d'un ou plusieurs courts textes, destinés à inspirer leurs lecteurs à réfléchir sur une leçon morale générale découlant de la lecture de l'image et du texte ensemble.
