Le Voyager 2 a révélé que, malgré la petite taille d'Enceladus, elle a une large gamme de surfaces, allant des anciennes régions à forte densité de cratères aux jeunes terrains déformés tectoniquement qui se sont formés il y a plus de 100 millions d'années. En 2005, l'engin spatial Cassini a lancé de multiples vols d'enceladus, révélant plus en détail sa surface et son environnement. En particulier, Cassini a découvert un panache riche en eau qui s'écoulait de la région polaire sud d'Enceladus.
