Endothélium
L'endothélium est la mince couche de cellules qui recouvre la surface intérieure des vaisseaux sanguins et des vaisseaux lymphatiques, formant une interface entre le sang circulant ou la lymphe dans la lumière et le reste de la paroi vasculaire. Les cellules qui forment l'endothélium sont appelées cellules endothéliales. Les cellules endothéliales en contact direct avec le sang sont appelées cellules endothéliales vasculaires, alors que celles qui sont en contact direct avec la lymphe sont connues sous le nom de cellules endothéliales lymphatiques. Les cellules endothéliales vasculaires encerclent l'ensemble du système circulatoire, du cœur au plus petit capillaire. Ces cellules ont des fonctions très distinctes et uniques qui sont primordiales pour la biologie vasculaire. Ces fonctions comprennent la filtration des fluides, comme dans les glomérules du rein, la tonalité des vaisseaux sanguins, l'hémostase, le recrutement de neutrophiles et le trafic d'hormone. L'endothélium des surfaces intérieures des chambres cardiaques s'appelle endocardium.
