Eolith
Un eolith est un nodule éraillé. Les eolithes ont déjà été considérés comme des artefacts, les premiers outils en pierre, mais on croit maintenant qu'ils sont naturellement produits par des processus géologiques tels que les glaciations. Les premiers eolithes ont été recueillis dans Kent par Benjamin Harrison, naturaliste amateur et archéologue, en 1885. Les découvertes de Harrison ont été publiées par Sir Joseph Prestwich en 1891, et les eolithes ont généralement été reconnues comme des outils grossièrement fabriqués depuis le Pliocène. D'autres découvertes d'eolithes au début du 20ème siècle - en East Anglia par J. Reid Moir et en Europe continentale par Aimé Louis Rutot et H. Klaatsch - ont été considérées comme des signes d'habitation humaine de ces zones avant les fossiles connus les plus anciens. En effet, les résultats anglais ont contribué à assurer l'acceptation des fausses persuasions de Piltdown. Parce que les eolithes étaient si grossiers, on a commencé à croire qu'ils étaient indiscernables des processus naturels d'érosion. Marcellin Boule, un archéologue français, a publié un argument contre le statut artefactuel des eolithes en 1905, et Samuel Hazzledine Warren a confirmé le point de vue de Boule après avoir effectué des expériences sur des silex.
