Les granulocytes à éosinophiles, généralement appelés éosinophiles ou éosinophiles, sont des globules blancs et l'un des composants du système immunitaire responsable de la lutte contre les parasites multicellulaires et certaines infections chez les vertébrés. Avec les mastocytes, ils contrôlent également les mécanismes associés à l'allergie et à l'asthme. Ce sont des granulocytes qui se développent pendant l'hématopoïèse dans la moelle osseuse avant de migrer vers le sang. Ces cellules sont éosinophiles ou "acides", comme en témoigne leur affinité pour les colorants au goudron: Normalement transparent, c'est cette affinité qui les fait apparaître rouge brique après coloration avec de l'éosine, un colorant rouge, en utilisant la méthode Romanowsky. La coloration est concentrée dans de petits granules dans le cytoplasme cellulaire, qui contiennent de nombreux médiateurs chimiques, tels que les histamines et les protéines telles que la peroxydase d'éosinophiles, la ribonucléase, les désoxyribonucléases, la lipase, le plasminogène et les principales protéines basiques. Ces médiateurs sont libérés par un processus appelé dégranulation suite à l'activation des éosinophiles et sont toxiques pour les tissus parasites et hôtes. Chez les individus normaux, les éosinophiles représentent environ 1 à 6% des globules blancs et ont une taille d'environ 12 à 17 micromètres.

Eosinophil granulocytes, usually called eosinophils or eosinophiles, are white blood cells and one of the immune system components responsible for combating multicellular parasites and certain infections in vertebrates. Along with mast cells, they also control mechanisms associated with allergy and asthma. They are granulocytes that develop during hematopoiesis in the bone marrow before migrating into blood. These cells are eosinophilic or 'acid-loving' as shown by their affinity to coal tar dyes: Normally transparent, it is this affinity that causes them to appear brick-red after staining with eosin, a red dye, using the Romanowsky method. The staining is concentrated in small granules within the cellular cytoplasm, which contain many chemical mediators, such as histamines and proteins such as eosinophil peroxidase, ribonuclease, deoxyribonucleases, lipase, plasminogen, and major basic protein. These mediators are released by a process called degranulation following activation of the eosinophil, and are toxic to both parasite and host tissues. In normal individuals, eosinophils make up about 1-6% of white blood cells, and are about 12-17 micrometers in size.
