L'analyse des facteurs est une méthode statistique utilisée pour décrire la variabilité entre les variables corrélées observées en fonction d'un nombre potentiellement plus faible de variables non observées appelées facteurs. Par exemple, il est possible que les variations dans quatre variables observées reflètent principalement les variations de deux variables non observées. L'analyse factorielle recherche de telles variations conjointes en réponse à des variables latentes non observées. Les variables observées sont modélisées en combinaisons linéaires des facteurs potentiels, plus les termes "erreur". L'information acquise sur les interdépendances entre les variables observées peut être utilisée plus tard pour réduire l'ensemble des variables dans un ensemble de données. Calculément, cette technique équivaut à une approximation de faible rang de la matrice des variables observées. L'analyse des facteurs est originaire de psychométrie et est utilisée dans les sciences du comportement, les sciences sociales, le marketing, la gestion des produits, la recherche opérationnelle et d'autres sciences appliquées qui traitent de grandes quantités de données. L'analyse des facteurs est liée à l'analyse des composantes principales, mais les deux ne sont pas identiques.
