Fluorescence
La fluorescence est l'émission de lumière par une substance qui a absorbé la lumière ou d'autres rayonnements électromagnétiques. Il se produit également lorsque les molécules sont excitées pour des états électroniques plus élevés par des bombardements d'électrons énergétiques, comme par exemple dans les aurores naturelles, les explosions nucléaires à haute altitude et les expériences d'armes à électrons à fusée. C'est une forme de luminescence. Dans la plupart des cas, la lumière émise a une longueur d'onde plus longue et donc une énergie plus faible que le rayonnement absorbé. Cependant, lorsque le rayonnement électromagnétique absorbé est intense, il est possible qu'un électron absorbe deux photons; Cette absorption de deux photons peut conduire à une émission de rayonnement ayant une longueur d'onde plus courte que le rayonnement absorbé. Le rayonnement émis peut également avoir la même longueur d'onde que le rayonnement absorbé, appelé "fluorescence de résonance". Les exemples les plus frappants de fluorescence se produisent lorsque le rayonnement absorbé est dans la région ultraviolette du spectre, et donc invisible à l'œil humain, et la lumière émise se trouve dans la région visible.
