Les portes sont importantes pour empêcher la propagation du feu. Ils agissent également comme une barrière au bruit. De nombreuses portes sont équipées de mécanismes de verrouillage pour permettre l'accès à certaines personnes et garder les autres. Comme une forme de courtoisie et de civilité, les gens frappent souvent avant d'ouvrir une porte et d'entrer dans une pièce.
