Geminal
En chimie, le terme geminal se réfère à la relation entre deux atomes ou des groupes fonctionnels qui sont attachés au même atome. Le mot provient de gemins latins signifiant «jumeaux». Un diol geminal, par exemple, est un diol attaché au même atome de carbone, comme dans le méthanediol. Le préfixe gemme peut également être appliqué à un nom chimique pour désigner cette relation, comme dans un gem-dibromide pour "dibromide geminal". Le concept est important dans de nombreuses branches de la chimie, y compris la synthèse et la spectroscopie, car les groupes fonctionnels attachés au même atome se comportent souvent différemment lorsqu'ils sont séparés. Les diols de gemminux, par exemple, sont facilement transformés en cétones ou aldéhydes avec perte d'eau. L'exemple suivant montre la conversion d'une cyclohexylméthylcétone en un dichlorure de gemme par une réaction avec du pentachlorure de phosphore. Ce gem-dichlorure peut alors être utilisé pour synthétiser un alcyne. Le terme apparenté vicinal se réfère à la relation entre deux groupes fonctionnels qui sont attachés aux atomes adjacents.
