La géométrie est une branche de mathématiques concernée par des questions de forme, de taille, de position relative des figures et les propriétés de l'espace. Un mathématicien qui travaille dans le domaine de la géométrie s'appelle un géomètre. La géométrie s'est produite de manière indépendante dans un certain nombre de cultures précoces comme un ensemble de connaissances pratiques concernant les longueurs, les zones et les volumes, avec des éléments de la science mathématique formelle émergeant en Occident dès Thales. Au 3ème siècle av. J.-C., la géométrie a été mise sous une forme axiomatique par Euclide, dont le traitement - la géométrie euclidienne - établit une norme pendant plusieurs siècles à suivre. Archimède a développé des techniques ingénieuses pour calculer les zones et les volumes, à bien des égards, anticipant le calcul intégral moderne. Le domaine de l'astronomie, en particulier en ce qui concerne la cartographie des positions des étoiles et des planètes sur la sphère céleste et décrivant la relation entre les mouvements des corps célestes, a servi de source importante de problèmes géométriques au cours d'un millénaire et demi. Dans le monde classique, la géométrie et l'astronomie ont été considérées comme faisant partie du Quadrivium, un sous-ensemble des sept arts libéraux jugés essentiels pour un citoyen libre de maîtriser.
