La maladie de la main et de la bouche du pied est un syndrome humain causé par des virus intestinaux de la famille des picornaviridae. Coxsackievirus A16 et Enterovirus 71 sont les souches les plus courantes connues pour causer l'HFMD, mais de nombreuses autres souches de coxsackievirus ou d'entérovirus sont connues pour provoquer ce syndrome viral. L'HFMD est une infection virale commune et hautement contagieuse qui provoque généralement une maladie fébrile légère suivie d'une éruption maculopapulaire qui peut impliquer la peau des mains, des pieds et de la cavité buccale. HFMD est assez fréquent et affecte généralement les nourrissons et les enfants, mais peut affecter les adultes immunocompétents à l'occasion. Les virus qui causent des HFMD se propagent par contact direct avec le mucus, la salive ou les excréments d'une personne infectée. HFMD se produit généralement dans de petites épidémies dans les écoles maternelles ou les jardins d'enfants, généralement pendant les mois d'été et d'automne. La période habituelle d'incubation est de 3 à 6 jours. L'HFMD ne doit pas être confondue avec la fièvre aphteuse, une maladie virale distincte connue pour affecter les moutons, les bovins et les porcs, mais la transmission aux humains est exceptionnellement rare. La plupart des cas du syndrome disparaissent eux-mêmes et ne nécessitent aucun traitement autre que de fournir un soulagement symptomatique.
