Les Jardins suspendus de Babylone étaient l'une des Sept Merveilles du Monde Ancien, et le seul dont l'emplacement n'a pas été définitivement établi. Traditionnellement, ils auraient été construits dans l'ancienne ville de Babylone, près de l'actuelle Hillah, province de Babil, en Irak. Le prêtre babylonien Berossus, écrit vers 290 av. J.-C. et cité plus tard par Josephus, a attribué les jardins au roi néobabylonien Nabuchodonosor II, qui a régné entre 605 et 562 avant JC. Il n'y a pas de textes babyloniens existants qui mentionnent les jardins, et aucune preuve archéologique définitive n'a été trouvée à Babylone. Selon une légende, Nebuchadnezzar II a construit les jardins suspendus pour sa femme médiane, la reine Amytis, car elle a manqué les collines verdoyantes et les vallées de sa patrie. Il a également construit un grand palais qui a été appelé «La Marvel de l'humanité». En raison du manque de preuves, il a été suggéré que les Jardins suspendus sont purement légendaires, et les descriptions trouvées dans les écrivains grecs et romains anciens dont Strabo, Diodorus Siculus et Quintus Curtius Rufus représentent un idéal romantique d'un jardin oriental.
