L'élévation héliacale d'une étoile survient avant qu'elle ne devienne visible au-dessus de l'horizon oriental pendant un bref moment juste avant le lever du soleil, après une période où elle n'avait pas été visible. Chaque jour après l'élévation de l'héliacal, l'étoile augmentera légèrement plus tôt et restera visible plus longtemps avant que la lumière du soleil levant ne disparaisse. Au cours des jours suivants, l'étoile se déplacera de plus en plus vers l'ouest sur le dôme du ciel avant l'aube, jusqu'à ce qu'il ne soit plus visible dans le ciel à l'aube car il s'est déjà établi sous l'horizon de l'Ouest. C'est ce qu'on appelle le paramètre chimique. La même étoile réapparaîtra dans le ciel de l'est à l'aube environ un an après sa précédente ascension héliacale. Parce que la montée héliacale dépend de l'observation de l'objet, son temps exact peut dépendre des conditions météorologiques. Certaines étoiles, lorsqu'elles sont vues d'une latitude particulière sur Terre, n'auront pas d'ascension ou de réglage héliacal. Ce sont des étoiles circumpolaires, qui sont soit toujours dans le ciel, soit jamais. Par exemple, le North Star n'est pas visible en Australie et la Croix du Sud n'est pas vue en Europe, car elle reste toujours en dessous des horizons respectifs.
