Flash à l'hélium
Un éclair à l'hélium est la fusion fugueuse d'hélium dans le noyau d'étoiles de faible masse inférieure à environ 2,25 masses solaires et supérieure à environ 0,5 masse solaire, ou à la surface d'une étoile nain blanche accrétée. Un glissement d'hélium se produit dans ces situations car l'hélium est dégénéré, ce qui signifie qu'il est soutenu contre la gravité par la pression mécanique quantique plutôt que par la pression thermique. Ainsi, une augmentation de la température dans le matériau en fusion ne permet pas d'étendre le matériau et, par conséquent, le refroidit et il n'y a pas de régulation du taux de fusion. La densité très élevée accélère également le taux de fusion. La réaction nucléaire en fuite suivante émet de l'énergie à un taux comparable à l'ensemble de la Voie lactée, mais seulement pendant quelques secondes. Dans le cas des étoiles normales de faible masse, l'énergie est absorbée par l'étoile et n'est pas visible de l'extérieur. Le processus se termine lorsque le matériau est chauffé au point où la pression thermique devient de nouveau dominante et le matériau se dilate et se refroidit. Le flash de l'hélium, non détecté par l'observation, est décrit par les modèles astrophysiques.
