Infante Dom Henrique de Avis, le duc de Viseu, plus connu sous le nom de Henry the Navigator, était une figure importante dans la politique portugaise du XVe siècle et dans les premiers jours de l'Empire portugais et l'ère des découvertes. Il a été le cinquième enfant du roi portugais John Ie et responsable du développement précoce de l'exploration portugaise et du commerce maritime avec d'autres continents grâce à l'exploration systématique de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, des îles de l'océan Atlantique et à la recherche de nouvelles routes. Le roi John I a été le fondateur de la Maison d'Aviz. Henry a encouragé son père à conquérir Ceuta, le port musulman sur la côte nord-africaine à travers le détroit de Gibraltar, de la péninsule ibérique. Il a appris les opportunités des routes commerciales sahariennes qui se sont terminées et sont devenues fascinées par l'Afrique en général; Il était très intrigué par la légende chrétienne de Prester John et l'expansion du commerce portugais. Henry est considéré comme le patron de l'exploration portugaise.
