Historiographie
L'historiographie se réfère à la fois à l'étude de la méthodologie des historiens et au développement de l'histoire comme discipline, ainsi qu'à un ensemble de travaux historiques sur un sujet particulier. Les chercheurs discutent l'historiographie de façon topique, comme l'historiographie de l'Empire britannique, l'historiographie de l'islam tôt ou l'historiographie de la Chine, ainsi que différentes approches et genres tels que l'histoire politique ou l'histoire sociale. À partir du dix-neuvième siècle, avec l'ascension de l'histoire académique, un ensemble de littérature historiographique s'est développé. La question de savoir dans quelle mesure les historiens sont influencés par leurs propres groupes et leurs loyautés - par rapport à leur état-nation - est une question très débattue. Les intérêts de recherche des historiens changent avec le temps, et au cours des dernières décennies, l'histoire diplomatique, économique et politique traditionnelle a évolué vers de nouvelles approches, en particulier les études sociales et culturelles. De 1975 à 1995, la proportion de professeurs d'histoire dans les universités américaines s'identifiant à l'histoire sociale est passée de 31% à 41%, tandis que la proportion d'historiens politiques est passée de 40% à 30%.
