Hans Holbein le Jeune
Hans Holbein the Younger était un artiste allemand et un graveur qui travaillaient dans un style Renaissance du Nord. Il est surtout connu comme l'un des plus grands auteurs du 16ème siècle. Il a également produit de l'art religieux, de la satire et de la propagande de la Réforme, et a contribué de façon significative à l'histoire de la conception du livre. Il s'appelle «le Jeune» pour le distinguer de son père, Hans Holbein l'Ancien, un peintre accompli de l'école gothique tardive. Né à Augsbourg, Holbein a travaillé principalement à Bâle en tant que jeune artiste. Au début, il a peint des peintures murales et des œuvres religieuses et conçu pour les vitraux et les livres imprimés. Il a également peint le portrait occasionnel, faisant sa marque internationale avec des portraits de l'humaniste Desiderius Erasmus de Rotterdam. Lorsque la Réforme a atteint Bâle, Holbein a travaillé pour des clients réformistes tout en continuant à servir les mécènes religieux traditionnels. Son style gothique tardif a été enrichi par les tendances artistiques en Italie, en France et aux Pays-Bas, ainsi que par l'humanisme de la Renaissance. Le résultat était une esthétique combinée exclusivement la sienne. Holbein s'est rendue en Angleterre en 1526 à la recherche de travail, avec une recommandation d'Erasmus.
