L'impérialisme, tel qu'il est défini par le Dictionnaire de la Géographie Humaine, est une relation humaine et territoriale inégale, habituellement sous la forme d'un empire, basée sur des idées de supériorité et de pratiques de domination, et impliquant l'extension de l'autorité et du contrôle d'un état Ou les gens au-dessus d'un autre. Type identifié par Feuer est «l'impérialisme progressif» fondé sur une vision cosmopolite de l'humanité, qui favorise la propagation de la civilisation à des sociétés prétendument arriérées pour élever le niveau de vie et la culture dans les territoires conquisés et l'allocation d'un peuple conquis pour assimiler à l'impériale La société, un exemple étant l'Empire britannique qui prétendait donner à leurs «citoyens» un certain nombre de Tages. Le terme en tant que tel a été principalement appliqué à la domination politique et économique occidentale aux 19ème et 20ème siècles.
