Hygiène professionnelle
L'hygiène du travail est l'anticipation, la reconnaissance, l'évaluation, le contrôle et la prévention des dangers liés au travail qui peuvent entraîner des blessures, des maladies ou affecter le bien-être des travailleurs. Ces dangers ou facteurs de stress sont généralement divisés en catégories biologiques, chimiques, physiques, ergonomiques et psychosociales. Le risque d'un effet sur la santé d'un facteur de stress donné est une fonction du danger multiplié par l'exposition à l'individu ou au groupe. Pour les produits chimiques, le profil de réponse à la dose peut être compris comme le plus souvent basé sur des études ou des modèles toxicologiques. Les hygiénistes du travail travaillent en étroite collaboration avec les toxicologues pour la compréhension des dangers chimiques, les physiciens pour les dangers physiques et les médecins et les microbiologistes pour les dangers biologiques. La British Occupational Hygiene Society définit que «l'hygiène du travail consiste à prévenir la santé du travail grâce à la reconnaissance, l'évaluation et le contrôle les risques".
