L'Irak a une section étroite de littoral mesurant 58 km (36 mi) sur le golfe Persique du nord et son territoire englobe la plaine alluvial de Mésopotamie, l'extrémité nord-ouest de la chaîne de montagnes de Zagros et la partie orientale du désert syrien. Deux rivières principales, le Tigre et l'Euphrate, se dirigent vers le sud par le centre de l'Irak et s'écoulent vers le Shatt al-Arab près du golfe Persique.
