Jaffna
Jaffna est la capitale de la province du nord du Sri Lanka. C'est le quartier général administratif du district de Jaffna situé dans une péninsule du même nom. Avec une population de 88 138, Jaffna est la 12ème plus grande ville du Sri Lanka. Jaffna est à environ six milles de Kandarodai qui a servi d'emporium célèbre dans la péninsule de Jaffna depuis l'antiquité classique. La banlieue de Jaffna, Nallur, a été la capitale du royaume médiéval de Jaffna à quatre siècles. Avant la guerre civile sri-lankaise, c'était la deuxième ville la plus peuplée du Sri Lanka après la capitale commerciale Colombo. Depuis l'insurrection des insurgés des années 1980, l'occupation militaire, les dommages importants, l'expulsion et le dépeuplement sont arrivés. Depuis la fin de la guerre civile en 2009, les réfugiés et les personnes déplacées à l'intérieur de leur pays rentrent chez eux et la reconstruction du gouvernement et du secteur privé a commencé. Historiquement, Jaffna a été une ville contestée. Il a été transformé en une ville portuaire coloniale pendant l'occupation portugaise de la péninsule de Jaffna en 1619. Elle a changé de mains pour les colonies néerlandaises, qui l'ont perdu aux Britanniques en 1796.
